Five on Friday 11/15: Weekend Events in Charlotte, Atlanta & Raleigh

Sorry it’s been a few weeks.  This little ditty takes some time to put together and I’ve realized it can’t be a last minute production.  Pardon my delinquency and let’s just get right down to it.  Here are some fun family weekend events for your neck of the South.

Charlotte

lollipops

1. Lollipops Concert: Adventures in Outer Space. Knight Theater
Saturday, November 16th, 11 am
To infinity and beyond! Take off for galaxies far far away with Roquefort the mouse on a cosmic journey fueled by music from Star Wars, E.T., Superman, and Planets pit-stops. Suit-up for the adventure in your intergalactic-inspired costumes, and prepare to navigate an asteroid field.  Pre-concert festivals begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Knight Theater Lobby; children explore music through hands-on activities including a lively drum circle, music-related arts and crafts, and The Symphony Guild of Charlotte’s “Musical Petting Zoo.”  Plan to stay after for the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art’s Family Days for an afternoon of art activities. Adults are $4 and children are free.

2. Animal Grossology at Discovery  Place

3. Fall Festival at Lazy Five Ranch
November 16, 9am-1 hour before sunset
Activities include: the infamous pumpkin slingshot, corn box, straw castle, sorghum pressing and cooking, kettle corn, the widest variety of fall decorations in the area for sale and more.   All activities are included with admission with the exception of the pumpkin slingshot ($1.00 per pumpkin to shoot) and decorations. Be sure to plan your trip so you can enjoy feeding the animals as well as the fall activities!

4. Turkey Talk at Charlotte Nature Museum
November 16, 2013, 10:00am
Join the volunteers of Carolina Waterfowl Rescue and their special guest, Mr. T, a domesticated wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), and learn the many differences between wild and domestic turkeys.  Make and masquerade with your own snoods and wattles – the fleshy red mass that covers a turkey’s nose and neck – during Snood on a Stick craft time. Grandpa Tree will be performing Autumn Woods, and story time will feature a range of turkey tales.

5. America Recycles at Museum of York County
Sunday, November 17th from 1-4
Recycling activities and crafts for all ages to celebrate America Recycles Day including: holiday recycling activities, fishing for litter game, greeting card boxes, preschool play area and more.

1.   “MODERN FAMILY Pop Up Photo Studio” at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta
Saturday, November 16 and Sunday, November 17, 10:00AM-7:00PM
Take a break from holiday shopping and create the ultimate family holiday card with USA Network’s MODERN FAMILY Pop-Up Photo Studio. MODERN FAMILY fanatics, otherwise known as “MOFYs” (“Make Our Family Yours”), will have the opportunity to snap free photos with show-inspired props including cardboard cutouts of cast members at malls in key cities across the country.  These images will be transformed into custom-animated MODERN FAMILY-themed GIFs and cinemagrams, shareable across e-mail, text, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram from tablets within the studio

2. Home for the Holidays
58 Blackland Road NW in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood
Sponsored by the Southeastern Horticultural Society, this weekend will focus on plants, gardening and the environment. Workshops include a Holiday Herb Salt workshop, Mr. Damon’s Nature Discovery Puppet Play workshop and a floral-arranging workshop.

3.  Mr. Greg’s Musical Madness Concert
The Punchline in Sandy Springs, November 16th at 1pm
Mr. Greg and his Funtastic Band stage an Interactive, high-energy, fun-filled show (best for preschoolers), performing songs from highly acclaimed Parents’ Choice Award-winning Lots of Fun! CD. Mr. Greg (Greg Roth) and his music are frequently featured on Atlanta’s PBS station. Song themes include environmental awareness, kindness and respect, and physical fitness

4. Holiday Gift Show at Northside Methodist Preschool
2799 Northside Drive NW, Atlanta, GA 30305
November 16th, 9am
The Gift Show will feature more than 75 vendors with unique items for all ages, including original art and crafts from local, talented artists.

5. Radio City Christmas Music Spectacular
November 16th & 17th, 2800 Cobb Galleria Pkwy.
The Rockettes are traveling to Atlanta and will perform classic numbers, such as the “Parade of Wooden Soldiers” and “The Living Nativity”, as well as new numbers with dazzling costumes, new sets and a 50-foot LED screen for 2013. Showtimes vary.

Raleigh

Porsche Exhibit

1.  North Carolina Museum of the Arts, Porsche by Design Exhibit
Little car lovers will appreciate Porsche by Design: Seducing Speedmarks the North Carolina Museum of Art’s first design exhibition, exploring the history and development of the Porsche lineage from the 1930s to the present day. Featuring 22 automobiles, Porsche by Design presents cars owned by Ralph Lauren, Steve McQueen, and Janis Joplin, as well as the one-of-a-kind Panamericana concept car on loan from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

The Triangle Rock Club crew teaches children safe rock-climbing skills. Supervised by an American Mountain Guides Association climbing wall instructor. Ages 6-11. Reservations recommended.

November 16th, 9-4:30pm at Wakefield High School, 2200 Wakefield Pines Dr., 27614
Features handmade arts and crafts, gifts, jewelry, fresh cut greenery, bake sale, basket raffle and more. The event supports Students Against Hunger. $5 ($1 off with a canned food donation). Free for ages 11 and younger.

4. Triangle Truck Day at Bright Horizons
Saturday November 16th from 10-12
Take part in a fun-filled morning of free activities, games, face painting and more. Enjoy a large variety of vehicles and trucks for kids and adults of all ages to explore.
